The divine hill station situated in the western ghats of
Sahyadris is not far-flung from the weary life of the concrete
jungle. Because of its elating climate, and picturesque beauty,
Lonavla has always been the most popular picnic spot for Mumbaiites.
Weather
Known as the ‘Jewel of Sahyadri’ this place
is lively and green all over the year. The climate is mild
during summers, while winters are cool. However, the best
time to visit this place is between the months of October
and May.
Prime Attractions
Caves- The name Lonavala is derived from
the Sanskrit word ‘Lanavli’, which means a city
surrounded by many caves. Hence, Karla and Bhaja Caves, located
in the hills, 11km from Lonavla are a must watch. These ancient
rock-cut cave temples are among the superior examples of Buddhist
art in India.
Lakes-There are various lakes which are
worth a visit like Tungarli, Lonavala and Bhushi. The Bhushi
dam is a favourite spot with people who want to get drenched
during the monsoon. The Valvan Lake has a beautiful dam, garden
as well as Pisiculture center.
Forts-Popular excursions from here are the
18th century forts of Lohagad and Visapur. The Tunga fort
and Rajmachi fort (10 km) are also famous ancient forts.
Tigers Leap is another hotspot which provides a spectacular
view of the 650 meters deep valley.
Adventurers can try their hand at rock climbing at the Duke’s
Nose peak(12km) and other locations in the Karla hills, near
Lonavala.
Satayam Shivam Sundaram
This man-made waterfall is a hit with families. Sightseers
can have fun under the waterfall, or swimming in the pool.
Bhairavnath Dev Stan
This place which is close to Lonavala has banned vehicles.
It is known for enthralling variety of deep valleys, thick
forests, monkeys and peacocks, streams etc. to reach the temple
one has to be careful as the slippery steps are carved out
of a rock and a creeper.
Manashakti
Manashakti, the largest yoga center in India attracts both
foreign and local tourists seeking yogic healing. This health
resort tries hard at giving a tension free life for everyone.
How to Get There?
Air: Nearest airport is situated in Pune
at 64-km.
Rail: Lonavala is on the main railway line
between Mumbai and Pune. All express trains between the two
cities stop here. There is also an hourly shuttle service
for Pune
Road: Lonavala is situated on the Mumbai
Pune Highway. One can take the Express Highway as well as
the National Highway. It is 104-km from Mumbai and 64-km from
Pune. The bus service between Lonavala and Mumabai is good.
Travelers can hire bicycles on hourly basis to travel around
Lonavala.
