John Abraham

- Vikram Chandiramani

When a star is hot, the air around him seems charged with anticipation.  Producers, media, admirers, gossip, hoardings and TV channels echo one another. John Abraham is hot. It became clear when he accidently knocked down two boys cycling on the roads of Mumbai, and injured his leg. He took the two to the hospital, got them admitted (there weren’t too many injuries) and then got himself admitted to Lilavati Hospital. This happened when Amitabh Bachchan too was in the hospital. Yet, John got a lot of media attention.

As hot is the topic of his split from Bipasha and the involvement of Mallika Sherawat as the cause. John’s female admirers are waiting with baited breath to make sure that their John is foot loose not that his commitment to Bipasha drastically affected his popularity.

John Abraham arrived in the very first film: Jism. As a costar of hot and happening Bipasha, John attracted a lot of attention.

Saaya, Paap, Lakeer, Aitbaar didn’t do anything great at the box office but John’s following went on increasing to become loud and clear when Dhoom was released. John and his bike created an image that was lapped up by the young and John became a youth icon. John Abraham was not part of 'Dhoom 2' but has reportedly been signed for 'Dhoom 3'. He has also been signed by Ajay Devgan's secretary and producer Kumar Mangat for a two film deal. Kumar Mangat is reportedly paying him a fee of Rs.7 crores.

In Taxi Number 9211 he was pitted against a formidable Nana Patekar in a role that was natural for Nana and would get him taalis. Nana was playing a hot headed taxi driver. Yet, John more than stood his ground.

Garam Masala had him doing comedy, considered difficult for an actor, with aplomb. John Abraham's recent releases haven't done too well. 'Baabul' ,' Kabul Express' and 'Salaam-e-Ishq' failed at the box office. John personally remains a busy and coveted actor.

His forthcoming films are Goal, where he co-stars with Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani. The film is based on Touchstone Pictures' 2005 Hollywood movie also titled Goal!

He will be part of Exclusion to be directed by internationally acclaimed director, Deepa Mehta. The film will co-star Amitabh Bachchan, Seema Biswas and well-known British actor Terence Stamp.

He's also working in Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam a remake of the 1962 hit Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and to be directed by Rituparno Ghosh.
