Simi Garewal had come from England on a holiday along with her parents, and was staying at Hotel Ashoka in Delhi when she saw Mehboob Khan. She eagerly approached him for `a break'. Seeing that she was a little girl in a pony tail, he told her to complete her studies.
Years later, she came to Bombay again. On the party circuit, she again met Mehboob and this time, he signed her up for 'Son of India'. Though mannequin-like and an alien in the Indian ethos, Simi survived on her marketing skills. She did 'Johar Mehmood in Goa'(1965), 'Mera Naam Joker', 'Do Badan', '`Namak Haram', 'Saathi', 'Karz' and several other films. Her 'Kathputli Ki Dor Kisi Aur Ke Haath Mein Hai' in 'Do Badan' put her among the best in supporting actresses. So did her sensitive performance as a teacher on whom the teenager Rishi Kapoor has a crush on.
Simi's moment of fame was when she did a bi-lingual 'Sidhartha'. Boldly, she did a topless scene with Shashi Kapoor. The scene was retained in the English version but deleted from the Indian version. When a magazine published the picture, a red-faced Simi went to court. Another memorable performance of Simi has been in 'Karz', where she plays a murderess. These days she has a TV-production company and hosts a successful TV show 'Rendezvous with Simi Garewal'.
