Since the CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 comprises of several modules, you may find it running slower than other competing software. When you want to change the settings run a full systems scan, you'll find the relevant module revving up its engine and initializing a separate window. Using security solutions software when booting into Windows invariably affects the boot time to at least some extent. This is usually a minor trade-off between the security and the little delay that such a software brings with it. Not here. The CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 is much slower than some other competing software such as Norton and Kaspersky when it comes to booting into Windows.
CA keeps anti-virus protection and anti-spyware protection separately in this suite. This is quite unlike most other security solutions software where both scans are usually run simultaneously. With CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 you need to schedule both scans separately. You can specify the time interval that you want between two scans.
There are various aspects to the security solutions suite that may also affect your browsing speed. This software has anti-phishing abilities and parental control features. Having CA act as a watchdog also means slowing down the speed at which web pages load.
CA has opted for certification from various software testing labs. This has however been less than impressive. While West Coast Labs certified this product for virus detection and removal, ICSA labs certified it for virus detection but didn't do so for removal. In the recent past, companies developing anti-virus software have focused on providing frequent updates. While in the past, Symantec would release one update a week for its anti-virus software, now with real-time updates, the company updates its anti-virus software hundreds of times a day. Most other companies update their software hundreds of times every week while CA offers barely a couple of updates a week.
CA offers tech support for all its users. There are also knowledge base articles on their website which provide a lot of information when you have to fix anything that seems to be a challenge. The real-time protection capability of CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 isn't as sharp as that of Norton. While it does remove viruses, it's not as effective dealing with malware.
Many years ago when the CA had a partnership with Zone Alarm, its firewall was very strong and dependable. After the partnership came to an end, the CA firewall was mediocre. Since then there's been considerable improvement in the effectiveness of its firewall. While some years back post the partnership breakup, CA's firewall protection would leave several ports open on a system, this year's edition is far more effective in dealing with such security issues.
However considering that you already have protection with Microsoft Windows firewall, assuming that you use the Windows operating system, paying for the sort of firewall protection that CA offers doesn't seem a very attractive proposition.
CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 controls the Internet access for programs installed on the system. The programs that are recognized as bad are prevented from accessing the Internet while programs considered legitimate are allowed access to the Internet. Where the software falters is when it comes across a program that is unknown. While software from Symantec and Kaspersky deals with them effectively, CA considers unknown programs to be 'good' and grants them Internet access. This potentially compromises the security.
This is how CA functions in the silent mode, the default mode for the firewall. You can change this mode to 'Ask me what to do' and have better security. However this mode puts the onus on the user whether or not to allow each programme to access the Internet.
To give the software its due, it was not possible to disable it by altering the Windows registry in a malicious manner. The firewall did a good job of tackling this attempt to stop. CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 also stays on the lookout for programs that try to launch other programmes which may be malicious, it also prevents malicious programs from injecting code into legitimate programs. We however found that installing this security solutions suite on the computer made it difficult to install several other small software. There would be no clear reasons why the installation was not possible.
This software also comes with toolbar called the website inspector toolbar, compatible with Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you visit a website it is rated as green, yellow or red. While Green signifies that the website has been verified, yellow signifies low-risk and red signifies high risk. CA has developed this toolbar in partnership with CallingID for the technology. There are too many false positives generated with this toolbar with regular legitimate websites being considered as low-risk or high-risk. The rating is not as effective as it should have been.
This software also has anti-phishing ability but when compared to Internet Explorer and Firefox, we found its accuracy to be limited. There is an antispam filter that works with Outlook, two express, Windows mail. You can configure your POP3 e-mail accounts to run through this filter and deal with spam. Unless the person who is sending you e-mail is on your white list, they mail will invariably be quarantined. When you move an e-mail from quarantined list to your inbox all future mail from that sender will reach your inbox.
The CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 works out cheaper than other security solutions software. While most other security solutions companies give you a license that lets you install their suite on up to three computers, CA is more generous in this respect and you can install their software on up to five computers.
This security solutions suite also has a privacy protection feature that protects the data of the user and prevents it from being transmitted on the Internet via forms or e-mail. The private data is stored in encrypted format. You can add any website that you trust to the trusted sites list and these websites will be allowed to receive your private data. This is a helpful feature if you use the Internet for online banking, stock trading or other such purposes where sensitive personal information is transmitted. These privacy protection measures protect you from phishing websites. If you use an online discount broker you can add their website to the safe list, so some other website masquerading as this one will not be allowed to get your password even if you make a mistake in identifying the website.
For parental control features CA has a tie up with the Australian company PureSight. The parental control offered by CA is not very impressive. It often doesn't block inappropriate websites and also turns up a lot of false positives, blocking perfectly legitimate websites. You can create profiles for each eyelid your family but you cannot associate these profiles with Windows accounts. You can create a time schedule when a child is allowed to access the
Internet and also the total amount of time that a person is allowed to go online. It is not possible to work around these restrictions by tampering with the system clock. If you configure it so, you can also be e-mailed a daily, weekly or monthly report about the user agent pattern of the child. You'll also get a list of all the URLs visited by each child. This report however is too exhaustive and locating the inappropriate URLs in it is somewhat time-consuming. A few kids try to hike into the admin password or otherwise tamper with the system you can be e-mailed an abuse alert if you configure it so.
While CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 does have many useful features and is less expensive compared to other sweets as it offers a five user license compared to three users by most other companies, it is somewhat slow as compared to competing products. Given the wide choice of security solutions software, you might want to consider other software such as Norton for your system.
