The interface of this version is quite similar to earlier versions with some minor changes. There are two tabs - my computer and my home network. The ‘My Computer’ tab has most of the controls that you would use. The ‘My Home Network’ tab provides you with the network map and lets you perform a gamut of functions. You can see the security status at any given time and can fix any configuration issues with a single click.
The security activity dashboard will give you an overview of all the recent threats to your computer that have been titled. This information is provided in graphical format and also in numbers. You can view detailed information in the logs about this. Most threats are taken care of without much of user intervention required. We could install Trend Micro Internet Security Pro V2 smoothly. When we tried this suite are system that had a lot of viruses and malware, it seemed to hang. However rebooting the system, going into safe mode and running a full system scan same to fix the problem.
Trend Micro offers free support for its products you can choose from free live chat, e-mail or toll-free phone support. If you opt for chat you have to provide some information about the problem before you enter the chat. You are then provided a list of solutions by way of search results, automatically. You can choose to enter chat after you have decided that the search results don't meet your requirement. We have always found their technical support people to be helpful and friendly. Trend Micro Internet Security Pro V2 has been certified by the major labs - West Coast labs and ICSA labs. They have given it their approval for the ability to detect and remove viruses. These lab tests have also established the effectiveness of this software to deal with spyware, malware and Trojans.
When we tried installing this software on a system that has several viruses, keyloggers, spyware and other trouble the installation process was not very smooth but going into safe mode and running a full system scan ensured that the installation went through. This software is not as effective in dealing with key loggers as it is in wiping out viruses and malware. One feature we especially like is that Trend Micro lets you know if there are any critical updates from Microsoft that you should have applied but haven't. There are various ways that Trend Micro uses to prevent you from downloading malware. Unless you're hell-bent on installing them, this software does a good job of protecting your PC from such programs. Trend Micro may or may not detect key loggers. However if a key loggers installed on your system, Trend Micro will render it ineffective by not letting it capture your keystrokes. What it will capture and said will be garbage. This does not however prevent the key logger from taking screenshots and keeping track of the websites visited.
Trend Micro Internet Security Pro V2 does not come up with pop-ups at the drop of a hat unlike some other security solutions software. There is a very large list of trusted programs that, as long as they are virus free, will be given Internet access by the software. If it doesn't recognize a particular program it will ask you if you want to grant it Internet access and will flag it as 'suspicious' sometimes. The database of known programs that Trend Micro considers legitimate is very large. There are over 1000 trusted companies in this list and anything that has been digitally signed by a company in this list is given the green signal without asking the user.
The firewall that comes with this security suite has four different profiles. The most rigid among these is the direct Internet connection profile. Other profiles are meant for wireless Internet access, home Internet access and office network Internet access. Each profile has its own unique firewall configuration settings and Trend Micro changes the settings depending on the network. This software also protects the ports of the system from Port scanners very effectively. If it finds a port scanner. It puts all the ports in stealth mode immediately.
Trend Micro makes a lot of decisions about granting or denying Internet access to specific programs on its own without putting the user, who may not be technically adept, into a dilemma every now and then. If you're an expert user you can always overrule anything that the software does. However it is quite smart at distinguishing the good from the bad when it comes to programs seeking Internet access. It makes a lot of the decisions based on the behavioral pattern of the programs. Suspicious activity by any program gets a red flag and sometimes Internet access to a program will be denied. This coupled with the real-time protection increases the strength of Trend Micro's protection.
Trend Micro Internet Security Pro V2 also gets tough with a program that tries to modify the Windows registry in a malicious manner. Some programs will try to exploit holes in the operating system, browser or some legitimate application. This is where the security suite steps in and prevents the damage. In such a situation it also reports the attack was stopped
The Trend Micro toolbar is compatible with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It plays an important role in preventing phishing. If you try to visit a website that is pretending to be some other website to gain access to your account, Trend Micro will block access to the fraudulent website. There are various factors that are taken into account to determine whether a website is legitimate or not. Websites with domain names that have been around a long time are those with security certificates get brownie points for legitimacy. Trend Micro has the ability to block a single webpage that it considers risky instead of having to block an entire domain. If you visit a MySpace page that has a malicious script, it's not going to block the entire MySpace website but rather only the problematic URL.
Trend Micro also warns about pages that show up in the search engine results of the major search engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN. It's also compatible with the instant messaging software of these three portals - Windows live messenger, Yahoo messenger, AOL Instant Messenger etc. While the anti-phishing ability of Trend Micro is impressive it is not flawless. For the maximum security against phishing websites, Trend Micro should be used in conjunction with the anti-phishing features of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Using the parental control features of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro V2 you can regulate Internet access irrespective of the browser being used. You can configure parental control settings for each individual account within Microsoft Windows. You can block websites by category, control the artist of the day when a particular user can go online, limit Internet access to a certain number of hours each day and do many other things. Your children will not be able to tamper with Trend Micro and its Internet regulation once you have everything in place.
You can also use the private data protection features of Trend Micro to protect your personal information and prevent it from being disseminated via the Internet using online forms, e-mail, instant messages. You can associate each user account with specific personal information and keep any data that you want. This data is stored in a safe manner using encryption. With these protection methods, Trend Micro will prevent your kids from parting with personal information such as your phone number, address and other details via e-mail or instant messenger. The Instant Messenger filtering features are compatible with Windows Live messenger/Yahoo messenger/AOL Instant Messenger/ICQ and their latest versions. There are ways to workaround the Instant Messenger protection. All the user needs to do is use an Instant Messenger that's not supported.
When entering personal information on a website, you can add certain websites to an exception list. This also works as an anti-phishing method because it blocks sending the password to any website except the alleged website for that password. Trend Micro's parental control feature isn't as effective when it comes to blocking porn. There are many websites that remain unblocked. You can always tweak the settings to ensure greater protection but this will invariably result in many false positives, but perfectly legitimate websites being blocked altogether. What we like most about the parental control features of Trend Micro is its ability to prevent personal information from being sent out.
The antispam features of Trend Micro are compatible with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook express. All mail that is marked as spam is sent directly to the spam folder. You can choose from varying filter strengths for spam filtering including high, medium or low. You can add some of your contacts to the white list and can modify the pointless at any given time. You can also add domain names to the white list and all e-mail addresses associated with the domain name will reach your inbox. All the people you send e-mail to automatically added to the white list.
The spam filter was somewhat slow down downloading messages because it checks against a database of known spam messages. Some of the filtering is done off the messages have been downloaded. This version of Trend Micro is quicker, easier to install and uses up less system resources than earlier. Despite the parental control features and the anti-phishing methods, the speed of browsing Internet websites is not affected significantly.
You can also keep your files safely using a feature called the remote file lock. This creates an encrypted folder on your system where your files are stored. You can then access these files only with the user id and password. Trend Micro has an ingenious way of dealing with computer theft. Should your computer ever get stolen you can log on to the Trend Micro website and informed them. The next time your computer accesses the Internet, Trend Micro will seal the vault making it impossible to access it even with the user id and password. If you're able to get your computer back, you will be able to access the file vault.
This version of Trend Micro also has better virus protection. There is a Wi-Fi Advisor that lets you know whether the network you connect it to a safe or not and whether it is encrypted. It also has mobile security features with which you can deal with viruses on your mobile phone.
Trend Micro also makes it easier to manage all the computers in your network. You can run a scan on any computer within your network and apply critical updates. You can see recent threats that have been handled and enable or disable several features. You can divide the class which computers within your network have the Trend Micro suite installed. The Trend Micro system to run is part of the Pro edition of the security suite. It will scan the Windows registry and locate entries that are redundant and that software programs that no longer reside on your system. It also brings up cookies and history from Internet Explorer. It will recommend the items for deletion and leave it to you to delete them with just a click. Using the software history cleaner you can delete the recent files list from various programs installed on your system including MS office/audio-video players/instant messaging programs etc.
