This version of Kaspersky Internet security has antivirus protection for all types of files, e-mail, Internet browsing and applications and processes that run on your computer. These are features that we have come to expect from every Internet security suite offered. One feature that Kaspersky Internet security 2010 doesn't offer is that of data backup. This is a blessing in many ways. We have noticed that Internet security suites offering everything possible than to slow down the system by hogging a lot of memory - something Kaspersky doesn't. Additionally some security suites have very mediocre backup systems. There are other stand-alone softwares available that do a better job of backing up data on your computer.

The user interface of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has been improved. The software is very user-friendly and easily manageable by even novice users. The antivirus capabilities of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 also protect you when you're using instant messaging software such as Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk or MSN Messenger. There are also anti-phishing features that will protect you from fraudulent websites.

Antivirus and Firewall

Installing malware also was impossible with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed. Removing malware that was already installed took a while and the computer had to be restarted a couple of times. This is quite normal though with most security suites. Almost all will slow down your computer to some extent when copying files, rebooting or running programs. This a a trade-off between the security they provide and the speed of the system. The antivirus removes all the serious threats without asking the user. For less serious threats, the user is given the option of deleting or retaining the file.

With this software, configuring the firewall is a very intuitive process. Most conventional firewalls ask for permission each time a new program accesses the Internet and this archaic way of managing internet access can become irritating. Kaspersky maintains a white list of trusted programs. These programs are granted full access unless you expressly disallow a program. This includes access to the Internet, the local network, operating system and personal data. Programs are categorized as low restricted, high restricted or trusted. Depending on the category, Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 gives more or less access to the program.

Firewalls in many Internet security suites tried to stealth all ports. Kaspersky functions differently and it blocks only when required. Keeping ports closed is usually enough to prevent brute force attacks and stealthing all ports can inconvenience users. Their firewall is more effective than most others. When we tried to hack into a test computer that had Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed, it blocked our attempted exploits and listed them for the user.

Safe Run - the new sandbox environment

There is a remarkable new feature offered by Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 known as 'safe run'. This is a virtual sandbox where you can run applications or open websites that you're unsure about. These are isolated from the operating system that you have installed. This means that if you visit a website that tries to install something on your computer, it won't succeed because you're working within a virtual sandbox. Any program that runs in the sandbox environment can't make permanent changes to your system. While immensely useful , this feature does take up a lot of memory and that is something that Kaspersky should look into fixing.

If you run a program that seems somewhat suspicious to Kaspersky, you'll get a pop-up asking if you want to permit the program to run. Simply give the go-ahead and it will work normally.

Anti-spam features

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has an improved spam filtering system wherein it filters spam from both POP3 and IMAP e-mail accounts. The e-mail clients supported by Kaspersky include Outlook, Outlook express, Thunderbird etc. When we tested the antispam features offered by Kaspersky, most of the spam was blocked and less than 1% of our personal mail ended up in bulk mail.

Certified by labs

There are two major labs in USA and Europe that certify antivirus programs - West Coast labs and ICSA labs have both certified Kaspersky antivirus technology for virus protection and removal.

Privacy Protection

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has many privacy protection features stop as mentioned earlier it will protect you against phishing websites . When you visit a website and enter the password you can do so using the virtual keyboard of the suite. This way the password cannot be captured by a key logger installed on your computer. Even a hardware-based key logger will not work for it. This is an excellent feature that protects your privacy. From this year on their virtual keyboard also prevents logging software that captures screenshots.

Parental control techniques for almost all Internet security suites are unimpressive and it is no different with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. You can associate Windows accounts with a profile that you have created. These profiles can be for child, teen or adult. You can block specific websites and also create a log of all the websites that have been visited. The filtering of websites does not depend on the browser used. You can also determine the number of hours every day and the time period during which your kids can access the Internet. This is where like most other softwares Kaspersky falls flat as you can just change the system clock and cheat the software to work around the Internet schedule created. If you're looking for parental control software you would do better with an independent product like Net Nanny or Cyber Patrol.

You can create a rescue disk with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 that can help you restore your computer if it refuses to boot due to a malware or virus infection. Creating such a rescue disk is the first thing you should do after you have installed the Kaspersky Internet security Suite 2010. Such a rescue disk can be invaluable at a critical moment. The intuitive firewall configuration process and the new sandbox environment introduced by Kaspersky make this software worth every cent.
