Alternative to Yahoo Music Unlimited to Go
UPDATE: As of February 1, 2008,
Napster
has revised prices for its consumer services. The price has increased for consumers from $9.95 to $12.95. Napster To Go prices will remain the same at $14.95.
Napster
also offers a service called 'Napster to Go'. With this service you can transfer music files to your portable device and listen to it on the move. This is an alternative to Yahoo Music Unlimited to Go, which was stopped by Yahoo last month. Yahoo no longer offers music subscription for portable devices.
Napster subscribers can download music to their PC and listen to it even when they're not connected to the internet. This is not possible with a trial subscription. You need to be connected to the internet if you're using a free trial. Napster turns out to be less expensive as compared to buying individual CDs from music stores. You can download specific tracks or several tracks at once, listen to the music on your PC or portable device.
Napster uses Macromedia/Adobe Flash player
You'll need the Flash Player because Napster uses Flash to stream files to your computer.
Napster
is currently available only to subscribers within the United States, UK, Canada and Germany. You can see a whole list of compatible devices for Napster on their web site. You'll need Napster to Go software to listen to music on the move. This can be downloaded from their website.
If you decide to buy a Napster to Go music subscription.
For $14.95 a month, you can download all the music you want to your portable device. As soon as you stop subscribing, your music won't work any more. This means you can listen to the music tracks only as long as you're a member. If you want to retain a track, you pay $0.99 and buy it for keeps.
Using Napster and Napster to Go music subscription with the iPod
Napster and Napster to Go don't work with the iPod because Apple, the creator of iPod has kept iPod and iTunes closed to music subscription services but many users have found ways to work around this. They buy tracks from Napster at a discount, convert them to MP3 and transfer them to their iPod. Napster and Napster to Go are compatible with most other digital devices and portable music players.
Cancelling Napster 7 day trial music subscription
If you want to cancel the
Napster
music subscripton at the end of the free trial, you will need to call them up and tell them so. Napster doesn't seem to offer online cancellation. If you plan to cancel, it would be a good idea to cal a couple of days ahead of when the subscription is expiring to avoid the bother of having them bill you and having to deal with your credit card company if you're not able to inform them in time. Of course, if you like what you get, like so many others do, then cancellation is not an issue at all.
