The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T. R. Baalu has approved an expenditure of Rs.16.94 Crore for the construction of a new bridge in place of existing old arch bridge across Palar river at Km.0/0 to 1/4 of old Palar bridge road in Vellore. The proposal has been approved in principle under the centrally sponsored Schemes of State Roads of Inter State Connectivity and Economic Importance for the year 2005-06.
The Department of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India has asked the Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu to provide necessary design and drawings for this project for further action with regard to the release of funds.
Thiru T. R. Baalu had visited Vellore recently and was approached by the representatives of the local residents for early construction of a new bridge in place of 100 year old brick arch bridge. The old bridge was found to be in a dilapidated condition as several of its spans were badly damaged during the floods some years back.
