As many as 4857 companies were registered in the country in May, 2005 under the Companies Act, 1956. The number of companies registered in the same month last year was 2831.
Of the 4857 companies registered in May this year, 4847 were limited by shares. These included five State-owned companies, namely, Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited, MSEB Holding Company Limited, Maharashtra State Power Distribution Company Limited, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited and Maharashtra State Power Transmission Company Limited. Eight guarantee companies and two unlimited liabilities companies were also registered in the same month. The total authorized capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs. 889.9 crore.
Out of the 4847 companies, limited by shares, registered in May this year, 152 were public limited companies with an authorized capital of Rs. 234.3 crore. The remaining 4695 were private limited companies with an authorized capital of Rs. 655.6 crore.
The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month was in Delhi (1321). It was followed by Maharashtra (861), West Bengal (581), Tamil Nadu(396), Andhra Pradesh(326) and Karnataka(249). The six States put together accounted for nearly 76% of the total number of companies registered during the month.
Most of the companies were registered under the industrial classification of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, Business Services(1448), Manufacturing(1392) and Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants and Hotels (908). Under other industrial classifications, the companies registered were Construction (603), Community, Social and Personal Services (211), Transport, Storage and Communication (157), Agriculture and Allied Activities (97) and Mining and Quarrying (31).
As many as 414 companies limited by shares reportedly ceased functioning in May this year either because of liquidation or their names having been struck off under Section 560 of the Companies Act. Of them, 74 were public limited and 340 private limited companies. Their number was 366 in Madhya Pradesh, 27 in Tamil Nadu, 15 in Rajasthan, 5 in Assam and one in Meghalaya. As per the industrial classification, 170 belonged to the Manufacturing sector, 115 to Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services, 37 to Wholesale and Retail Trade and Restaurants and Hotels and 36 to Construction, 23 to Agriculture and Allied activities, 15 to Transport, Storage and Communication, 12 to Community, Social and Personal Services and 6 to Mining and Quarrying.
