The total coal production in the country in July 2005 is estimated at 28.06 million tonnes (MT) as against 28.59 MT in the same month last year. Out of this 477 working mines of Public Sector Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries produced 24.05 MT, 67 mines of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a joint Undertaking of Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India, produced 2.36 MT and other 16 mines contributed 1.65 MT. The total off-take of coal during the month was 29.71 MT. Out of this, off-take by CIL was 25.55 MT, SCCL 2.40 MT and other mines 1.76 MT.

During the month, the Government have approved Dipka Opencast Expansion Project (20 MTY) and Gevra Opencast Expansion Project (25 MTY) of South Eastern Coalfields Limited in the State of Chhattisgarh, district Korba at an estimated cost of Rs.1,268.53 crore and Rs.1,667.55 crore respectively at March, 2005 price level. These projects will be funded entirely from the internal resources of the company.
