New Delhi, 03.09.2005

CBI today conducted searches at the residential premises of six officials of the State Bank of India, main branch at Dhanbad, Singhbhum, Balia and Mainpuri (UP) in connection with an allegation that these officials were involved in replacing notes with brown papers of the same size in the bundles of soiled currency notes of different denominations, meant for destruction by the Reserve Bank of India, and misappropriated about Rs 1,25,47,950. During the search, CBI officials recovered several incriminating documents which are under scrutiny by the investigators. Of the Six officers whose houses were searched, two officers of the State Bank of India, Dhanbad branch are the joint custodian of the currency chest.

CBI has registered a case against the accused persons who had adopted the modus operandi of inserting brown papers and other papers cut into the same size as currency notes of different denomination to conceal their fraudulent act. They had no inkling that their act will be detected since they had thought that the Reserve Bank of India will destroy the notes as soon as it received them. To their ill luck, the Reserve Bank of India, Patna branch detected the irregularities and returned the notes for segregating them properly.

Subsequent scrutiny of the notes under the supervision of senior State Bank officials revealed the fraud. The amount of loss may go up as the process of segregation of lower denomination notes are still continuing.
