Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi has said that training and experience gained by Defence officers while in service does not fetch them good jobs in the Corporate world unless their skills are reoriented and attitudes are moulded to match the needs of the business world. He was speaking while inaugurating a six-month Certificate Course in Business Administration for Armed Forces Officers at Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon today. The Air Chief commended the efforts made in this regard by the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR) which has been successful in enlisting the support of reputed Management Institutes of the country for conducting such courses.
Earlier in his address, the Director General Resettlement, Major General K S Sindhu underlined the necessity of such courses for the Defence Officers which equips and orients them to settle down in the Corporate Sector after retirement from active service.
The DGR under the newly created Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Ministry of Defence has taken the initiative towards rehabilitating retired officers by empanelling reputed Institutes, such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow, MDI Gurgaon, and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, to run Certificate Course in Business Management of six months duration, exclusively for officers of Army, Navy and Air Force. This course is so structured as to encapsulate the needs of business and industry, while simultaneously using the vast and varied experience of service officers and thus arriving at the best combination.
Two such initial courses were run by MDI Gurgaon and IIM, Lucknow from 1st September, 2004 to 17th Feb 2005 and 2nd January 2005 to 16th June, 2005 respectively. Both the courses were a phenomenal success, as all the officers desirous of securing jobs in the corporate sector, were offered very good placements. The present course at MDI, Gurgaon is the third in the series and is being attended by about fifty officers.
