With 30 Registrars having been accredited to offer '.in' domain name registration worldwide to customers, the number of such registrants has crossed over more than 1.3 lakh, besides generating a revenue of more than Rs. 9.00 crore since January, 2005. The Department of Information Technology (DIT) and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) took the initiative of setting up of the state-of-the art, hardware and software and relaunched the '.in' Registry. The entire process of registration is online. The opening of the '.in' Registry has significantly improved and broadened the availability of the domain names.
In order to bring about a substantially increased proliferation of '.in' Domain Name, a new '.in' Internet domain name policy framework and implementation plan has been formulated and the policy announced by the Government in October 2004. The policy aimed to remove the restrictions in the existing procedures impeding a liberal, expeditious and market-friendly approach to register large number of '.in' domain names. The registration of the '.in' domains has grown from 6,500 names to 130,000 in August,2005.
Recently the Government has announced '.in' Dispute Resolution Policy and rules of procedures. DIT is also in the process of evolving a roadmap for Implementation of multilingual Domain Names known as Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) under the Devnagari and Dravidian scripts.
Internet Domain Names worldwide have assumed greater significance in recent times with the Internet increasingly being used as an effective medium for communication, governance, education and commerce. The system of registration of Internet Domain Names can facilitate the proliferation of Internet in a country. Many countries have, therefore, adopted liberal and market friendly policies to register large number of Domain Names under their country code, broadly consistent with globally accepted policy and procedures of Domain registration.
