The Agriculture Ministry has suggested the following strategies for increasing the productivity of wheat.
Ensuring timely and adequate availability of quality seeds of location specific high yielding varieties in wheat growing areas.
Ensuring timely sowing of wheat. As far as possible sowing of wheat should be completed by November end.
Popularisation of HYVs of durum wheat in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra Gujarat and Karnataka.
Encouraging the balanced use of fertilizers as per the soil test and also the use of organic and bio-fertilizers.
Propagation of use of soil ameliorants like pyrite/gypsum in the soils with high phosphorus.
Encouraging the use of micronutrients in deficient areas.
Promoting the use of water saving devices/techniques.
Promotion of Zero till seed drills, seed-cum-fertilizers drills, strip drills and raised bed planter in the rice-wheat cropping system.
Promoting integrated weed management concept against Phalaris minor and wild oat involving cultural and mechanical measures together with the need based use of chemical herbicides.
Integrated pest and disease management especially of karnal bunt, loose smut and rust.
As per the fourth advance estimates, the production of wheat in the country during 2003-04 was 72.06 million tonnes. The current years target has been fixed at 78 million tonnes.
