secl to produce 84.55 million tonnes coal in 2006-07

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved the highest ever production of 71.009 million tonnes (MT) of coal after bifurcation of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in 1992, surpassing its target of 69 MT. It shows a growth of 6 per cent over the previous year production of 66.604 MT. It has achieved a record profit of approximately Rs.450 crore during the year 2003-04.

Considering the growth of the company, the CIL has fixed its coal production target for the year 2006-07, the closing year of the 10th Plan, at 84.55 MT. To ensure smooth supply and meet the increased demand, SECL has chalked out ambitious plan of starting 15 new projects during the 10th Plan. It is the largest coal producing company in India and operates in three districts of Madhya Pradesh and five districts of Chhattisgarh. The company has got 97 mines, out of which 76 are underground, 19 open cast and 2 mixed mines.
