Indian Railways carried 237.20 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight during the first five months of the current financial year ending August 2004 compared to 223.04 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, representing an increase of 14.16 MTs. The target of 235.40 MTs was exceeded by 1.80 MTs.
Excellent performance of revenue freight is indicative of the buoyancy in the core sector of national economy.
The annual target of freight traffic is 580 MTs.
During August 2004, a total of 46.28 MTs of revenue earning freight was loaded compared to 44.41 MTs during the corresponding month of the last year. This represented an increase of 1.87 MTs.
