railways earning from freight traffic up in april-august 2004

Indian Railways earned Rs. 11944.43 crores from 237.11 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight traffic during the first five months of the current fiscal year ending August 2004 compared to Rs. 11006.40 crores from 223.04 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year. This represented an increase of 8.52 per cent.

Of the total earnings from freight traffic, Rs. 5072.13 crores came from transportation of 107.26 MTs of coal, Rs. 439.86 crores from 16.60 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 572.05 crores from 5.52 MTs of finished iron and steel, Rs. 544.84 crores from 14.33 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 990.93 crores from 21.78 MTs of cement, Rs. 1327.74 crores from 19.40 MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 493.48 crores from 11.06 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 1122.50 crores from 13.15 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) and Rs. 1380.90 crores from 28.01 MTs of other goods.

The freight traffic in Net Tonne Kilometres (NTKMS) in millions registered a growth of 8.29 per cent over the corresponding period of the last year. It increased from 151217 million NTKMS in 2003-2004 to 16375 million NTKMS in the current financial year.

Earnings per million tonne increased from Rs. 49.35 crores to Rs. 50.38 crores, registering a growth of 2.08 per cent. Earnings in paise per net tonne kilometre increased from 72.79 paise to 72.94 paise, representing an increase of 0.22 per cent.
