Indian Railways have placed orders for procurement of 28157 wagons during the current financial year 2004-2005. This will take care of shortages of wagons faced in the previous year.
During 2003-2004, the increased movement of iron ore for export, coal to Thermal Power Houses and foodgrains for Public Distribution System (PDS) resulted in shortages of wagons. The shortages of wagons continued in the first quarter of the current financial year also. However, in the second quarter, there is no shortages of wagons.
