The President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has condoled the passing away of the eminent classical singer, Smt. Shobha Gurtu and the novelist Shri Mulk Raj Anand.

In his condolence message to Shri Narendra Gurtu, the son of the late singer, Dr. Kalam has said “Shobha Gurtu through her sheer dedication, hard work and desire to make it to the top, carved out a niche for herself in the world of thumri. Her ability to transcend the classical khayal form in which she was trained initially was evident in the way she delightfully rendered light classical music forms like the thumri and dadra. The classical music fraternity will miss her presence”.

In a message to Smt. Shirin Vajifdar Anand, the wife of the late novelist, the President has said, “Shri Mulk Raj Anand was a trailblazer in the field of the Indian English Novel and was known as one of the founding fathers of this genre. It is to his credit that he rose from humble beginnings to make a name for himself in India and abroad. Like all true patriots, he responded to Gandhiji’s call for participating in the Freedom Movement even while pursuing his literary interests”.
