There has been a marked improvement in railways safety during the first five months of the current financial year ending August 2004. The number of train accidents was 100 compared to 163 during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Freight loading registered 6.4 per cent growth exceeding the target of four per cent. Total loading stood at 237.20 Million Tonnes (MTs) compared to 223.04 MTs for the corresponding period of the previous year.

Lead of freight traffic in April-July 2004 was 691 kilometres against the target of 680 kilometres. It was 674 kilometres during the corresponding period of the previous year.

During the period, freight traffic in Net Tonne Kilometre in millions increased by 9.55 per cent over the last year and 2.78 per cent of the target.

The passenger growth over the last year was 4.91 per cent against the target of three per cent. As a result, earnings from passenger traffic increased by 5.47 per cent against the target of 4.8 per cent.

The freight earnings increased by 10.26 per cent over the target of 4.08 per cent.

Growth of total earnings over last year was 10.26 per cent against target of 4.6 per cent.

Total earnings in April-July 2004, compared to Budget proportion was Rs. 117 crores plus; whereas ordinary working expenses dipped by Rs. 173 crores. This resulted in a net surplus of Rs. 290 crores.
