Though the monthly and cumulative Index of Industrial Production for July and April-July 2004 have shown positive and general over all growth, compared with their corresponding periods of the previous year, negative growth has also been noticed in certain sectors. Jute and other vegetable fibre textiles (except cotton) have recorded a negative growth of 17.3 per cent followed by a decline of 11.8 per cent in wood and wood products, furniture and fixtures and a 3.5 per cent down slide in Basic Metal and Alloy industries.
However, as many as 11 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth in July. Machinery and Equipment other than transport equipment registered the highest growth of 30.2 per cent followed by 17.9 per cent in other Manufacturing industries. With the exception of coal and petroleum products, there has also been a rise of 14.3 per cent in basic chemicals and chemical products manufacturing industries.
As per use-based classification, the growth in July 2004 compared to July 2003 was 5.7 per cent in basic goods, 16.2 per cent in capital goods and 5.4 in intermediate goods. The consumer durables and consumer non-durables went up by 15.1 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively, with the over all growth in consumer goods being 10.3 per cent.
As already stated the quick estimates of Index of Industrial Production was 7.9 per cent higher in July 2004 compared to the same month last year. The indices of industrial production for the mining, manufacturing and power sectors not only registered growth in July 2004 but also a cumulative growth of 7.8 per cent for the period April-July 2004. Alongwith the quick estimates of IIP July 2004, the indices for June 2004 have undergone the first revision and those for April 2004 final revision in the light of the receipt of updated data. There are no significant revisions in the indices for April 2004 and June 2004. Sectorally, Mining registered growth in July compared to June 2004, but was lower against April and May 2004.
