The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has been pursuing and processing for implementation the recommendations made by the National Statistical Commission. Out of over 620 recommendations made by the Commission, the Ministry has implemented nearly 200 of them by the end of last month. The Commission was set up to suggest measures for making Indias Statistical System most modern and reliable.
Meanwhile, the Sub-Project Implementation Plan for taking up some important studies under Phase-I of the Project i.e. Modernisation of Statistical system in India, has been accepted by the World Bank and the participation agreement has been signed with the Department of Economic Affairs. The Phase-I studies are designed to improve the capacity, reliability and relevance of statistical system in India. Under Phase-II, the changes suggested would be implemented.
Also, it has been decided that India will take part in the 7th round table discussions of the International Comparison Programme of the United Nations. India has already begun the preliminary work for participation in the Conference. The International Comparison Programme evolved by the UN, facilitates comparison of macro-economic aggregates like Gross Domestic Product, Gross National Product etc. between different countries in a more meaningful way i.e. using the purchasing power parity numbers for comparison instead of the method based on Official Exchange Rates. An expert committee already constituted is looking into all the technical aspects of the International Comparison Programme and will accordingly advise the Central Statistical Organisation.
