The Chairman, Railway Board, Shri R.K. Singh, has congratulated officials of the Ministry of Railways for winning the first ever Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar Shield for their excellent performance in the progressive use of Official Language of the Union, Hindi. The Award was presented by the Union Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil on September 14, 2004, marking the Hindi Divas (Day). It was on September 14, 1949, that the Constituent Assembly had adopted Hindi as the Official Language of the Union in the Constitution of India, enforced with effect from January 26, 1950. Presiding over the 86th Meeting on Implementation of Official Language in Railway Board here today, the Chairman said that it was a day of great rejoicing and elation for the Railway Officials.
Talking of the implementation of the Action Plan for the current financial year launched by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, for progressive use of Hindi in the Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, Shri Singh urged the officials to ensure one or two dictations in Hindi everyday. He also said that any let up would not be tolerated.
The Chairman directed all the nine Public Sector Undertakings under his Ministry to use Hindi in their correspondence with A region where Hindi is lingua franca and upto sixty five per cent in B region where Hindi is spoken along with regional languages. Todays meeting, coming on the heels of the Hindi Divas, was followed by a scintillating Kavi Sammelan.
