Indian Railways have set in motion a number of measures to prevent overloading and undercharging of freight and percent trains.

A process has been put in place to detect major overloading points to maintain sustained vigilance.

A nation-wide campaign has been launched to prevent overloading and undercharging.

A policy decision has been taken to rotate officials in parcel and goods booking offices to prevent growth of vested interests.

Zonal Railways have been directed to keep Electronic-in-Motion and Mechanical Weigh Bridge in order. Its non-functioning for over a week will be viewed seriously and responsibility fixed for punitive action against the concerned official.

It has also been decided to increase the number of Electronic-in-Motion and Mechanical Weigh Bridge to ensure that all parcels and goods are properly weighed to prevent overloading and undercharging. Overloading causes hot axles and damages hot-springs of coaches and wagons resulting in accidents.

Prevention of leakages of revenue in passenger traffic through intensive campaign against ticketless travelling has also been launched.

All these measures are intended to mop up revenue to obviate hike in fare and freight rates.
