Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Department of Coal has produced 20.22 lakh tonnes of lignite during August 2004 which is 19.9 per cent more than the production of 18.55 lakh tonnes during the same month last year. The company during the month generated 1479.54 million units of power and exported 1254.7 million units. The power generation has grown substantially nearly 20 per cent more than the target of 1232 million units and 6.7 per cent more than the generation during August 2003.
Geological reserves of lignite in the country have been estimated at around 35,636 million tonnes (MT). Out of the above 4,150 MT spread over 480 sq. km. is in the Neyveli Lignite fields in Cuddalore District of which around 2,360 MT have been proved.
