inflation rate and consumer price index for industrial workers increases

The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed an increase of 1.42 percentage points during August 2004. It went up from 3.19% in July 2004 to 4.61% in August 2004. In August 2003, the inflation rate was 3.10 %.

The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for August 2004 (base 1982-100) also went up by five points to stand at 522 (five hundred twenty two) points.

The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 54 centres, the index increased between 1 to 28 points and in 4 centres it remained constant whereas in another 12 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 11 points when compared to the previous month.

During the month, Bhavnagar centre experienced the maximum increase of 28 points. The increase is mainly due to increase in cinema charges and rise in prices of Ground Nut Oil, Vegetables and Fruits, Sugar, Kerosene Oil etc. Thiruvananthapuram Centre experienced a maximum decrease of 11 points. The decrease is mainly due to the fall in prices of Fresh & Dry Fish, Onions, Supari, Clothing items etc. The index remained stationery in 4 centres viz. Madurai, Guntur, Mundakayam and Koimbatore.

The index in respect of six main centres for August 2004 stood at the following level: -
