The Tenth International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer will be observed here on 16th September 2004 in a function, which will be presided over by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Shri Namo Narain Meena. Director General (TERI) Shri R. K. Pachauri, will deliver the Key Note Address.

The UN General Assembly had proclaimed 16th September as the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The theme of this year's observance of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is "Save our Sky: Ozone Friendly Planet, Our Target".

On this occasion, Shri Meena will also present Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (IGPP) to individuals and organizations for outstanding achievements for protection of the environment.

In the individual category, Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar for the year 2000 will be given posthumously to Dr. Ramesh Bedi for his distinguished work in the area of Wildlife Conservation and Medicinal Botany. Shri Girish Gandhi will receive the Puraskar for the year 2001 for his exemplary services in the field of environment. The Puraskar for the year 2002 will be given posthumously to Rev. Fr. Koyapillil Matthew M. for his significant contribution to environmental research, education and eco-restoration on the Palini Hills.

In the Organization Category, The Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar for the year 2000 will be given to the Captive Power Plant of NALCO (The National Aluminum Company Limited) at Angul, Orissa for their achievement in management of flyash and waste water and development of green areas in abandoned mines. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has been selected for the Puraskar for the year 2001 for their deep concern for the environment and for their exemplary contribution in the field of environmental protection and conservation of the natural eco-system. Chilika Development Authority has been selected for the Puraskar for the year 2002 for their significant contribution in restoration and conservation of the Chilika lagoon.

A number of competitions such as poster design, painting, skit, model-making, slogan writing and quiz on ozone science were organized under the aegis of the National Museum of Natural History to mark this occasion. Prizes to the winners of these competitions will also be presented on this day.

The Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar, instituted in 1987 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests is awarded to organizations and individuals every year for their significant contribution in the field of environment. The Puraskar now carries a scroll and a citation to the selected individuals and organizations with a cash award of Rs. 5.00 (five) lakhs.
