The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of July 2004 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 197.6, which is higher by 7.9% as compared to the level in the month of July 2003.



The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of July 2004 stand at 146.8, 205.7, and 186.9 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 3.7%, 7.6% and 14.1% as compared to July 2003. The cumulative growth during April-July, 2004-05 over the corresponding period of 2003-04 in the three sectors have been 5.2%, 8.0% and 7.9% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 7.8%



Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for July 2004, the indices for June 2004 have undergone the first revision and those for April 2004, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for April 2004 and June 2004.



As many as 11 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of July 2004 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. 'Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment' have shown the highest growth of 30.2%, followed by 17.9% in 'Other Manufacturing Industries' and 14.3% in 'Basic Chemicals & Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal)'. On the other hand, 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)' have shown a negative growth of 17.3% followed by a decline of 11.8% in 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures' and 3.5% in 'Basic Metal and Alloy Industries'.



As per Use-based classification, the growth in July 2004 over July 2003 is 5.7% in Basic goods, 16.2% in Capital goods and 5.4% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 15.1% and 8.7% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 10.3%.



Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of July 2004, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
