The Ministry of Railways has decided to manufacture one aluminium body corrosion resistant light weight hopper wagon for conducting service trials in the current financial year.
Decision for future induction of aluminium body wagons will be taken based on favourable service trial results.
To overcome the problems of rusting and corrosion of wagons, the need to induct aluminium body wagon has been felt. That would improve reliability of wagons significantly due to less corrosion with resultant improvement in safety as well.
Corrosion is the single largest problem, which makes open wagons mostly unloadable prematurely. These unloadable wagons become unproductive and threaten safety of train operations. Corrosion takes place mainly in coal carrying open wagons, caused by the combined effect of corrosive acids and high abrasions of mechanized loading and unloading.
