The Vice President, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has underlined the need for development of Ayurvedic medicines with quick relief effect by strengthening research and standardizations through setting up of modern testing laboratories. He was releasing a book in Hindi on “Commercial cultivation of medicinal plants” written by Dr. Mayaram Uniyal and Dr. Gurpal Singh Jaryal, here this evening.

Shri Shekhawat said that the allopathic system of medicine does not suit our environment and physical characteristics. It is costly but has become popular because of aggressive marketing and scientific tests conducted in laboratories. Though Ayurveda is fully capable of providing a cheaper and much effective treatment but there is a need of establishing its reliability and quick effect. He suggested that the Union Government could take some action in this regard by setting up a well-equipped central laboratory with proper research, development and testing facilities for Ayurvedic medicines besides setting up due standards.

Shri Shekhawat expressed deep concern over the tendency of adulteration in medicines and said that the menace is to be dealt with not only by taking punitive actions but also by strengthening Ayurveda as an alternative and easily available system of treatment.

Earlier, introducing the book, the writer Dr. Uniyal said that the due to environmental degradation, the manufacturers of Ayurvedic drugs are not able to get quality herbs in adequate quantities. On the other hand, the farmers are not aware of the new techniques for growing such plants and herbs. It is, therefore, necessary that the farmers be encouraged for farming of medicinal plants by giving them adequate knowledge about the cultivation, conservation, storage and marketing techniques for this purpose.

The programme was organized under the auspices of International Ayurvedic Sansthan. The Presidnet of the Sansthan, Shri Baleshwar Agarwal and other scholars also addressed the function.
