arjuna award and dronacharya award for the year 2003 announced

The Government constituted two Selection Committees for selecting the Awardees for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Awards for the year 2003; Dhyan Chand Award for the year 2004 and Dronacharya Awards for the year 2003. The Committee for selecting Awardees for the first three Awards mentioned above was chaired by Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia and the Committee met on 8th September, 2004. The Committee for selecting the Dronacharya Awardees for 2003 was chaired by Shri Michael Fereira and it met on 6th September, 2004. Both the Committees submitted the following list of their respective Awardees to the Government. The Government has accepted the same. The following is the list of Awardees of all the awards.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award – 2003

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given for spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of Sports by a sportsperson in a year. This award carries an amount of Rs.5.00 lakhs..

The awardee for the year 2003 is:

Dronacharya Awards – 2003

Dronacharya Award is intended to honour Coaches who have done outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enabled Sportspersons to excel in International Events. This award carries an amount of Rs.3.00 lakhs.


For the year 2003 this award is being conferred upon the following persons:


Shri Robert Bobby George (Athletics)

Shri Anoop Kumar (Boxing)

Shri Rajinder Singh (Hockey)

Shri Sukhchain Singh Cheema (Wrestling)


Arjuna Awards-2003

The objective of Arjuna Award is to recognize outstanding achievement in the field of Sports at International level. The award carries an amount of Rs.3.00 lakhs.


For the year 2003, this award is being conferred upon the following sportspersons:

Dhyan Chand Award – 2004

The objective of Dhyan Chand Award is to honour those Sportspersons who have contributed to sports by their performance and continue to contribute to promotion of sports even after retirement from their active sporting career. This award carries an amount of Rs.3.00 lakhs.


For the year 2004, this award is being conferred upon the following sportspersons:


Brig. Labh Singh (Athletics)

Shri Hardayal Singh (Hockey)

Shri Mehendale Digambor Parasuram (Physically Handicapped)


Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 2002-2003

This Trophy is awarded annually to the University which has given the best and all round performance in sports activities during the year of the award. The winner receives a replica of the Trophy and cash award of Rs.2.00 lakhs which is to be utilized for acquiring sports equipments.


For the year 2002-2003 this Trophy has been won by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.


Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award - 2002

These awards are given to recognize the contribution and performance in the field of adventure sports in air, water and on land. One award is given for lifetime achievement in the field of adventure sports. This is the first time that these awards are being conferred by the President of India. These awards have now been equated with the Arjuna Awards in all respects. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.3 lakhs.
