Nehru Yuva Kendras under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will adopt 500 villages to develop as model villages on the lines of Gandhi Gram Swaraj. The Programme will be launched by Shri Sunil Dutt on October 2nd, 2004 with week-long Atm Nirbhar Gram Vikas Saptaha (Self Reliant Village Development Week) at Village Bhatti Mines, Mehrauli, New Delhi.
In the adopted 500 villages following targets will be achieved through a campaign mode within a year by Nehru Yuva Kendras.
Education
80% literacy.
Enrollment of all the children should be enrolled in the schools.
Renovation of primary school.
Smooth functioning of library and information centre.
Health and Family Welfare
Immunization of all children between the age group 0-5 years and pregnant mothers.
Smooth functioning of Anganwadi Centres.
Availability of drinking water.
Good sanitation, proper management of garbage.
Percentage of consumption of alcohol and other drugs are very very less.
Eligible couples are using contraceptive methods.
There should be consultancy health centre with regard to family planning, adolescent problems and solution, gender equality and so on.
Low cost latrines for each family.
Culture
To create atmosphere of no communal confrontation.
There should not be any untouchability.
All types of disputes may be settled in the village itself.
Local art and culture heritage are maintained and propagated properly.
Active participation of villagers of all communities on the occasions of marriage and other important functions.
Equal opportunities are provided to both young male and females to make their future.
Prosperity
Fertilizer/pesticides/chemical free agriculture.
Vocational training for Youth of the village.
Promotion to local paintings and handicraft.
Empowerment
Active youth club/mahila mandals.
Effective Gram Panchayat and Gram sabha
Regular meetings of gram Panchayat and gram sabha
People participation.
Empowerment of women, dalit and weaker sections.
Identification of the village for the programme is being done in consultation with the District Administration, Mahila mandal and youth bodies. According to the criteria decided for selection, each village should have population not less than one thousand, village should have its own Gram Panchayat, most of the families should be below the poverty line and it should have mix religious groups and castes.
To begin with, during the week, 2nd 8th October, 2004 Nehru Yuva Kendra will organise camps for community development, survey for work to be taken up during the year, cultural programme for communal harmony, Sarv-Dharm Prarthana, Vocational Training, Tarun Triveni van mahotsava, clean and green village campaign, prabhat pheri and Shah Bhoj(community meal). All districts NYKs will submit their reports within 10 days of completion of the week.
