Government has released 40 lakh metric tonnes of sugar as quota of indigenous freesale sugar for the quarter October-December 2004. With a levy quota of 2.16 lakh metric tonnes released for each of these three months, the total availability of sugar would be 46.48 lakh tonnes for the quarter.
The free sale quotas are meant only for internal consumption. With enough stocks in hand, the government would be able to release further quantities of sugar if required.
