implementation of freight operations information system

Thursday, September 30, 2004

Indian Railways are implementing Freight Operations Information System (FOIS) in phases. FOIS consists of Rake Management System (RMS) and Terminal Management System (TMS).

In the first phase of implementation, RMS has been implemented at 233 locations on Indian Railways. As a result, the basic information for goods train operations is now available at Divisional, Zonal and Railway Board Level.

The second phase of RMS includes obtaining the wagon-based information.

The Phase III of the project includes TMS that essentially captures information relating to the goods shed working.

Both second and third phases are being implemented concurrently.

In the current phase of implementation, the TMS is being implemented at 530 locations, out of which 170 TMS locations have, so far, been commissioned. All the TMS terminals are scheduled for completion by March 31, 2005.

The FOIS is intended to improve productivity of wagons and freight traffic.
