The All-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees CPI(UNME) on base 1984-85=100, for the month of August, 2005 was released here today, by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All-India CPI (UNME) for August, 2005 is 456, which is one point more than the index for the previous month i.e. July, 2005. At the group level, the index for August, 2005 when compared to last month i.e. July, 2005, has increased by 0.43 percent in respect of "Miscellaneous and 0.38 percent in respect of " Fuel & Light group. With the corresponding All-India index for August, 2004 being 437, the index for the month of August, 2005 has shown a rise of 4.3 % during the year.
Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India and 59 selected urban centres in the country for August, 2005; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for August, 2005 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for August, 2004 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for August, 2005 in respect of 59 selected urban centres with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely August, 2004. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.9 to 10.4 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Kohima and the least in the case of Bhavnagar. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 2 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 23 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 27 centres and 6.1 percent and above, for 7 centres. As many as 31 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the all-India figure of 4.3 percent while two centres have recorded equal percentage increase and 26 centres have recorded higher percentage increase as compared to the all-India average.
