The total production of coal in the country during 2004-05 was 382.14 million tonnes, while the proved coal reserves of the country as on January 2005 are 92,960 million tonnes. The Government have taken a number of steps to increase the production to meet the growing demand. As many as 101 mining projects have been considered to be taken up during Tenth Plan. The other steps include: advancing of planned production by CIL, mechanization/modernization of existing mines, improvement in equipment utilization, increasing productivity in underground and opencast mines, timely implementation of projects and allotment of coal blocks to end users for captive mining.
The production of coal in the country is planned basing on the demand projections of Planning Commission. If the demand of coal increases, the production may correspondingly increase. But the production potential is decided by a combination of factors like technological compatibility, conservation, safety and safeguarding of environment etc. The coal seams are required to be mined in a systematic manner with due economic consideration.
