steep rise in passenger handling domestic/international

The Civil Aviation Sector achieved significant growth during July 2005 in Passenger Handling both at International and domestic terminals. However, in Cargo Handling both import and export, the growth rate has been minimal. This is revealed in a Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, after a review of the performance of Infrastructure Sector during April-July this year.

In July, the Domestic Terminals handled 21.83 lakh passengers registering a growth of 22.3 per cent over the same month last year. Cumulatively, the growth during April-July 2005, totalled 20.4 per cent, with the number of passengers handled going up to 90.32 lakhs, in comparison with the corresponding period last year.

Against domestic, handling at International terminals during July 2005 was 10.8 per cent higher, with the number of passengers totalling 13.49 lakhs. Cumulatively in April-July, the international terminals handled 52.45 lakh passengers, registering an increase of 12.5 per cent over the same period last year.

Coming to Cargo exports from the international airports, they totalled 36,271 tonnes, during July, i.e. 2.2 per cent more than the same month previous year. Cumulatively the growth is higher at 9.1 per cent between April-July, compared to the corresponding period of last year, with the total cargo handled being 1,53,718 tonnes.

Import Cargo handled at these airports during July, was 24,741 tonnes, i.e. 4.6 per cent higher than last July and between April-July, the Import Cargo handled amounted to 96,941 tonnes, an increase of 7.8 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

The performance of Road Sector was the most impressive during April-July with 1843.18 kms. of Highways having been upgraded/strengthened, registering an increase of 46.3 per cent against the target of 1260 kms. However, interestingly this figure is 0.7 per cent lower than the achievement made, in the corresponding period of last year.
