Job seekers belonging to Scheduled Tribes has registered an increase of 68 per cent. Their number in the Live Register of Employment Exchanges increased from 13.8 lakh in 1994 to 23.1 lakh in 2003. Interestingly 61 per cent of them are educated (matriculation and above). An analysis of the Employment Exchange statistics by the Directorate General of Employment and Training of the Labour Ministry has revealed that the registration of Scheduled Tribe job seekers in a year varied between 2.1 lakh to 3.5 lakh during this period. They constituted 5.6 per cent of the total job seekers during 2003.
Despite increase in educated job seekers their placement witnessed decline as observed in all other categories. Placement was around 8,000 during 2002 as well as in 2003. The placement ratio was 2.3 per cent for Scheduled Tribe job seeker in 2003 which had gone up to 8.8 per cent during 1996. Madhya Pradesh, has maximum number 3.9 lakh Scheduled Tribes job seekers on the Live Register while maximum registration of Scheduled tribe job seekers during 2003 was 80 thousand in Jharkhand. Gujarat had a maximum placement of scheduled tribe job seekers.
