small scale sector’s contribution in employment generation

Friday, September 23, 2005

Employment generation has always been one of the main objectives of the Government policies aimed at economic development. Since large industries are not in a position to absorb the massive unskilled and semi-skilled workforce in rural areas, it is necessary to create more employment opportunities in villages by utilizing local resources and skills. Khadi and Village Industries Sector has got the highest potential to create new jobs in rural areas. Under the Rural Employment Generation Programme being implemented through KVIC, more than 2.07 lakh units have been set up, giving employment to more than 76.5 lakh people. Besides, more than 5.8 lakh people are gainfully employed in 9000 coir units in the country. It is noteworthy that the Small Scale Sector in India currently provides jobs to over 28.2 million people through 11.8 million units. The targeted rate of growth for the SSI Sector has been kept at 12 per cent in the Tenth Plan.

Expositions and fairs give us an ample opportunity in not only showcasing various products but also help in business interactions and to buy and sell innovative items under one roof. Keeping this in view, a National Expo of Small, Agro and Rural Industries is being organised from 26th to 29th September 2005 in New Delhi. Besides, three Seminars are being organised at the venue of the Exposition. These are: Innovative Financing for Small Enterprises Development; Rural Employment Generation Programme -- Opportunities and Convergence; and Cluster/Consortium based Development of Coir Industry. Experts from the related fields will be addressing and participating in the Seminars.
