The Vice President, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has called upon the Global Community to work jointly towards eliminating the menace of terrorism. Addressing the National Assembly of Armenia at its capital Yerewan today, Shri Shekhawat said that there is an urgent need today to create an atmosphere of peace at the international level for fulfilling the task of development and meeting the aspirations of the people at large without any hindrance or obstacle. Unfortunately, we have not been able to liberate the common man from fear and insecurity which is due to the continuing menace of terrorism. As a victim of terrorism for over two and a half decades, India is aware, more than any other country in the world about the negative impact of terrorism over the efforts for development and progress.
The Vice President recalled the historical and close cultural ties between the people of India and Armenia and the mutual cooperation the two countries have enjoyed at various multilateral forums.
Speaking about globalization, the Vice President underlined that the concept of globalization should be more real and wide-spread and be focused on increasing the collective happiness of millions of people who live in poverty and deprivation.
Earlier, Shri Shekhawat had a meeting with the President of Armenia, Mr. Robert Kocharian, soon after his arrival at the Yerewan from Minsk on the third and final leg of his three-nation tour that earlier took him to Romania and Belarus. He was warmly received at Zvartnots Airport by Armenian National Assembly Vice Chairman Vahan Hovhannisyan, Deputy Foreign Minister Gegham Gharibjanian and National Assembly member Mikael Vardanyan.
This is the first-ever Indian Vice Presidential visit to Armenia.
