Romania has assured its support to India for the permanent membership of the UN Security Council. This assurance came during the Indian Vice President, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s meetings with the Romanian President H.E. Mr. Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Mr. Colin Popscu Sharisinu at Bukharest on Monday. The two leaders greatly appreciated India’s cooperation with Romania in various fields. Other members of Indian delegation viz. Shri Jana Krishnamurthy, Shri P.K. Maheshwari and Shri Robert Kharsing and senior officials were also present.

Shri Shekhawat,who is on four day visiting to Romania, had a hectic schedule on Monday. He visited the Palace of Parliament and met his counterpart the President of the Senate Mr. Nicolae Vacarovi . Mr. Vacarovi expressed happiness that Shri Shekhawat has come to Romania on his invitation. The two leaders had wide ranging discussions on matters relating to India-Romania cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.

Later, Shri Shekhawat visited the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) and witnessed the proceeding of the House for about 20 minutes. While introducing Shri Shekhawat the Chairman of the House Mr. Adrian Nastase recalled Shri Shekhawat’s contribution in launching various developmental programmes for the weaker sections in India. Shri Shekhawat went around the Romanian Parliament and appreciated its grand architecture and décor

Later, at the banquet, hosted in his honour by the President of the Senate Mr. Nicolae Vacarovi, Shri Shekhawat spoke about the close ties between the people of India and Romania. He also applauded Romania’s contribution in setting up of an oil refinery at Guwahati, thermal power plant at Singori and a tractor manufacturing plant at Hyderabad. Shri Shekhawat also spoke about the progress made by India in various fields and said that a number of Indian entrepreneurs and industrial organizations are keen on investing in Romania. Shri Shekhawat also extended an invitation to Mr. Vacarovi to visit India.

Today in the forenoon, the Vice President, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat left for Belarus after concluding of his 4 days visit to Romania. Mr. George Sabin Kutas, Vice Chairman of the Senate of Romania and after senior officials were present at the airport.

Earlier today on his way to Airport, Shri Shekhawat visited the Rural Museum in Shenai. Going around the museum Shri Shekhawat said that the museum is so imaginatively designed that he is reminded of the villages in our own country. In the visitors book, Shri Shekhawat wrote,“we share similar values of a rich cultural heritage and harmony in the cradle of our society. I convey greetings from the villages of India to the villages of Romania, let us all join together work for the upliftment of our villages”.
