rationalised short service commission scheme in air force extended

Thursday, September 29, 2005

The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for extension of Rationalised Short Service Commission (Scheme in the Indian Air Force for Flying (Women) in transport, helicopter and navigation streams, aeronautical engineering (Electronics & Mechanical) and non-technical ground duty branches i.e. administrative, logistics, accounts, education and meteorology beyond December, 2005 with existing terms and conditions, revised to the extent that the term of engagement of the Rationalised SSC Scheme will now be 10 + 4 years.

The Indian Air Force will be able to continue to meet the shortfall in Permanent Commission cadre through this scheme.

The benefits from Rationalised Short Service Commission are:

SSC is financially more beneficial to the Government since the officers exit without pension.

The scheme helps in improving cadre mobility into higher rank for Permanent Commission Officers.

SSC is a popular choice among young people since it provides freedom of choice for individuals to continue, or exit after a shorter tenure of engagement as compared with Permanent Commission Officers. At present there are 792 officers in different branches in SSC.

It helps young ex-service officers to integrate well into civil life as dedicated and disciplined citizens.

Revision of term of engagement to 10+4 years will bring in uniformity in Air Force along with Army and Navy.

Background

Short Service Commission (SSC) Scheme was started in the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1985 with induction of officers in the Aeronautical Engineering Branch. In 1992, women were inducted for the first time in SSC in Non-Technical branches. Subsequently, from 1993 onwards, SSC Scheme was introduced for both men and women in flying, technical and non-technical ground duty branches. Since these schemes were introduced at different times, each scheme had different terms and conditions. Therefore, in 2001, all the schemes were clubbed under a single scheme called ‘Rationalised Short Service Commission Scheme’.
