railway freight earnings register continuous growth

Indian Railways have earned Rs. 14125.13 crores of revenue freight during the first five months of the current financial year ending August 2005 as compared to Rs 11944.43 crores during the corresponding period of last year.

The earnings from Railways freight during August 2005 was Rs. 2786.25 crores from 51.56 million tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight as compared to Rs. 2326.10 crores from 46.19 million tonnes of such traffic during August 2004, thereby registering an increase of 19.8% in rupee terms and nearly 11.7% in terms of million tonnes.

Of the total earnings, Rs. 1149.04 crores came from transportation of 23.00 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 137.24 crores from 3.94 million tonnes of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 144.84 crores came from 1.46 million tonnes finished iron & steel, Rs. 213.23 crores from 3.94 million tonnes iron ore for exports, Rs. 197.55 crores from 4.10 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 236.06 crores from 3.34 million tonnes of food grains, Rs. 143.67 crores from 2.82 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 234.82 crores from 2.71 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), and Rs. 329.78 crores from 6.25 million tonnes of other goods.
