The Revenue Earning Freight Traffic of the Railways remained below target during the period April-July this year. Against the target of 213.96 million tonnes, the Railways could achieve 211.35 million tonnes, missing it by 2.61 million tonnes. The Rail Sector also missed its Revenue Earning Freight Traffic target of 55.12 million tonnes for July, by 3.75 million tonnes. The annual target set for the Railways for 2005-06 is 635.00 million tonnes. This is revealed in a Review Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on the performance of the Infrastructural Sectors for the period April-July 2005.

However, in comparison with the achievements during previous July and April-July 2004, the revenue earning freight traffic of the Railways, has been higher though below the target set for July 2005 and April-July this year.

Coal being the highest revenue earner for the Railways, its movements also suffered a set back, with the July target being 7.5 per cent lower and the April-July 2005 figure lesser by 2.2 percent. Infact, the Railways could not achieve the targets set for the movement of Steel, Iron ore, Cement, Foodgrains and Fertilizers, during the month of July. However, during the period April-July, the achievement was much lower than the target in case of Iron ore, Cement, Foodgrains and Fertilizers except Steel, which was slightly lower.

However, movement of raw materials for Steel plants and other goods were higher in July as well
