The Infrastructure Sectors like Power, Cement, Petroleum and Roads achieved their target levels during the period April-July this year. The Sectors, which could not reach the target levels, include Coal, Finished Steel, Revenue Earning Rail Freight Traffic, Shipping and Ports, Fertilizers etc. In case of Telecom and Civil Aviation, the target figures set for the period being not available, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, could not reflect this in its Report on the performance of Infrastructure Sector during the period April-July this year.
Power overshot the target level by 1.69 billion units; Cement exceeded the target by 2.52 million tonnes, Petroleum also exceeded the target in Crude Oil production by 0.18 million tonnes, Refinery Production by 0.27 million tonnes and Natural Gas Production by 457 million cubic meters; Roads crossed the target by 583 kms. representing the highest increase of over 46 per cent above the target.
In case of Telecom, where the target figures being not available, the actual position reflected in the Report says that addition in switching capacity totalled 1967000.28 lines, telephone connections 1748000.41, cell-phone connections 5848000.85. In case of Civil Aviation, the sector from which also, the target figures being not available, the actual position, in case of export cargo handled at international airports totalled 153718 tonnes, import cargo handled at international terminals 96941 tonnes, passengers handled at international terminals 52.45 lakhs and passenger traffic handled at domestic terminals 90.32 lakhs. However, in case of Telecom, except Net-Telephony the target is said to have been achieved in cell-phone connections etc. while in Civil Aviation, reports indicate achievement of targets in all its four sub-sectors.
Compared with the same period last year, almost the sectors have achieved higher growth levels, excepting one or two.
