The Minister for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja today launched the community based pilot initiatives in Delhi as part of the National Capital Region (NCR) GOI-UNDP project on National Strategy for Urban Poor. Bawana, Dakshinpuri, Jahangirpuri, Kalyanpuri, Madipur and Nandnagri are the six places in Delhi where these projects will be implemented.
Speaking on the occasion, Km. Selja said that the launch of these initiatives is coinciding with the proposed National Urban Renewal Mission which intends to address the issues related to urban infrastructure, governance and provision of basic services to the urban poor. The Minister also observed that the growing pace of urbanisation is posing heavy demands not only on the Government but also on community based organisations in tackling the problems of housing, water and sanitation, waste management as well as income generation opportunities for the poor. She advised Government of Delhi, Civil Society Organisations and other stakeholders in these six locations to work together on a strategy to address the vulnerabilities of the poor in a time-bound manner. She also said that these community based pilot projects will go a long way in devising multiple strategies and solutions to tackle multi-faceted problems that the poor face and added that the lessons learnt from these projects will help the Government in making policy and programmes more efficient and effective at the national level.
Kumari Selja observed that the success in these pilot projects would also help in bringing urban poor in the identified clusters out of the poverty trap by converging all the programmes and schemes and the available resources at the local level. Emphasis here is more on bottom up approach by involving and mobilising the community in the formulation as well as implementation of the action plans by the NGOs and acting as a link between the people and the government, the Minister added.
Among those present on the occasion were Smt. Chitra Chopra, Secretary, UEPA and Shri Narendra Kumar, Secretary (Social Welfare, Government of NCT Delhi).
