Chief of Army Staff Gen JJ Singh inaugurated the sports infrastructural complex at Army Sports Institute at Pune today. With the inauguration of this facility, Army’s Mission Olympic will get a major boost

Constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore with an additional Rs 3 crore invested in sports and sports science equipment, the Institute is one of the most modern and well-equipped sports institutes in the country. The world-class sports infrastructure complex houses the wherewithal for the technical training of the six sports disciplines of Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Diving, Wrestling and Weight Lifting including fully furnished boarding, lodging and messing facilities for 200 sportspersons.

The 300 sq ft sports sciences complex boasts of state of the art equipment, some of which is yet to be seen anywhere else in the country. This complex is the fulcrum around which all activity at the Institute hinges be it the initial selection procedures, training or monitoring of performance of the sportspersons. This facility will enable bridging the large gap between Indian and international sports standards.

Established in July 2001, the Army Sports Institute already has major achievements to its credit like the success of winning the team silver medal at the world Archery Championship and individual gold at Commonwealth Boxing Championships in 2005. Noteworthy are the performances of Archer Nb/Sub Tarundeep Rai, Boxer Sub Som Bahadur Pun and Marathon runner Hav KC Ramu. The commissioning of the new complex will enhance the state of sports performances considerably, and shall be a major factor towards the preparations for the 2006 Doha Asian Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Senior officers of Army, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympics Association and various sports federations and association and Olympians of yester years were present and attended the inaugural function.
