The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during July was Rs.5,411 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 1,963 crore (36 per cent). Next in the order of importance were: petroleum (crude) Rs.1,532 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs.753 crore, iron ore Rs.552 crore, lignite Rs.182 crore and limestone Rs.148 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95 per cent of the total value of mineral production in July 2005.
Production levels of important minerals in the month were : coal 282 lakh tonnes, lignite 25 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 2,604 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 28 lakh tonnes, bauxite 945 thousand tonnes, chromite 273 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 12 thousand tonnes, gold 269 kg., iron ore 120 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 7 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 166 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 73 thousand tonnes, apatite & phosphorite 134 thousand tonnes, dolomite 356 thousand tonnes, limestone 136 lakh tonnes and magnesite 36 thousand tonnes.
During the month, the output of apatite & phosphorite increased by 55.6 per cent, copper conc. 14.3 per cent, gold 8.5 per cent, natural gas (utilised) 1.0 per cent and a nominal increase was observed in the output of magnesite. However, the output of chromite decreased by 12.7 per cent, manganese ore by 10.5 per cent, lead conc. 8.1 per cent, zinc conc. 5.5 per cent, bauxite 5 per cent, coal and lignite 2.3 per cent each, petroleum (crude) 1.6 per cent, limestone 1.1 per cent, iron ore 1.0 per cent and a nominal decrease was reported in dolomite.
