Lt Gen KS Rao, Director General Border Roads was one of the star attractions of Queen’s Baton Relay for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, which took place here today. An Arjun award winner himself, he was selected by the Indian Olympic Association to participate in the event.

He took part in the sailing expedition around the world in 1985-87, for which he was honoured with the Arjun award in 1986. He won the National Regatta for the Corps of Engineers in 1968 and 1975. He also won an individual event in the National sailing Championship held in 1972.

In 1977, Lt Gen Rao sailed the distance from Mumbai to Diu and back in a small boat (Seabird Class). In the same year he repeated this feat from Bandar Abbas in Iran to Mumbai via Karachi. Negotiating these distances in a small boat only fueled his ambitions and he captained the Indian Army Yacht Trishna from U.K. to Mumbai. This was in 1984.&nb! sp; By now he was well prepared for bigger adventures and a year later he achieved what then was a remarkable feat, as the leader of the Trishna expedition, which sailed around the world covering a distance of 30,000 nautical miles.
