The Department of Official Language has announced Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Awards for the year 2003-04. These awards are given every year to the Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, nationalised banks and financial institutions, Public Sector Undertakings and Town Official Language Implementation Committees for promoting the use of Hindi in their official work . Cash awards are also given to the employees of the Central Government for writing original books in Hindi on the subjects relating to their official work.

Ministries/Departments have been placed in two categories for awarding these prizes. The Ministries and Departments which have more than 300 employees are placed in the first category. In this category the Department of Food and Public Distribution has been selected for the first prize, the Ministry of Home Affairs for second prize and the Ministry of Labour for third prize. The Ministries/Departments which have less than 300 employees are placed in second category. In this category the Ministry of Textile secured the first prize, the Ministry of Small Scale Industries the second and the Ministry of Civil Aviation third prize.

These awards are given to the Public Sector Undertakings located in ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ regions separately for each region. ‘A’ region includes the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal and Union Territories of Delhi and Andaman & Nicobar. ‘B’ region includes the States of Gujrat, Maharashtra and Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh and the rest of States and Union territories fall in ‘C’ region.

Among PSUs located in region ‘A’, the Engineers India Ltd., New Delhi has secured the first position. The second position goes to Krishak Bharti Cooperative Ltd., Noida and the third position goes to Central Warehousing Corporation, New Delhi .

The Cotton Corporation of India Ltd., Mumbai has bagged the first prize among the PSUs located in ‘B’ region. The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India Ltd., Mumbai and The Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Mumbai have been awarded second and third prize respectively.

Among the PSUs located in region ‘C’, the National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd., Hyderabad has bagged the first prize. The Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bangalore and the National Insurance Company Ltd., Kolkata has got the second and third prize respectively.

The Central Bank of India has been selected for the first prize among the nationalised banks and financial institutions. Union Bank of India and the Allahabad Bank are at second and third places respectively. Besides this, three consolation prizes have been awarded to the Canara Bank, the Bank of Maharashtra and the Punjab National Bank.

The Town Official Language Committees are set up in major towns of the country so that more and more official work may be done in Hindi in various offices. At present, 253 such Committees are working in the country. Among these Committees, the awards have gone to the Committee of Panipat(Offices) from ‘A’ region, Chandigarh(Banks) from ‘B’ region and Kolkata(PSUs) from ‘C’ region .

Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Awards are also given to employees of the Central Government to encourage writing of original books in Hindi on various subjects pertaining to official domain. The first prize is for a sum of Rs., 20,000, the second prize for of Rs., 16,000 and the third prize for Rs. 10,000. In this category the first prize goes to Shri Manohar Lal Batham and Shiv Charan Vishvakarma jointly for their book ‘Aatankvaad-Chunauti Aur Sangharsh’. Dr. R.A. Joseph has been awarded the second prize for his book ‘Punarvaas Ke Aayaam’
